Informal Introduction

I have been interested in science for as long as I can remember. My study of science can be traced back to as far as elementary school science fairs and volcano projects. I pursued my interest in science by attending STEM summer camps and high school research mentorship, with Regeneron, for example. As I grew older and had more exposure to the world of medicine and learned more in the sciences, the idea of becoming a doctor became a personal goal. My interest in studying medicine has only grown, combined with my desire to use my knowledge in favor of helping others. Additionally, I enjoy the field of research because of the boundless potential to discover the unknown.

I was involved in a mentorship program with Regeneron, where I had the profound experience of learning more about genetics and the pharmaceutical industry. This program brought to light the boundless world of research and medicine. As a young woman in a male-dominated field, the work that I have accomplished in this program was done so under a diverse group of researchers. This supports the ideology that medical research is a universal objective. Pursuing a path in health professions consists of the kind of studies that I have been a part of and plan to do in the future. I could not be more grateful to have had this opportunity, as it has reassured my devotion to becoming a doctor. From a global perspective, I intend to save lives and treat patients to the best of my ability and that of modern medicine. For example, there is a liver pump that compensates for the inefficiency of the general chemotherapy to heal liver metastases. This pump was recently designed and developed by a well-renowned group of doctors and engineers. Studies have shown that it increases the life expectancy of patients with the pump by two years, which can make a significant difference in the lives of patients, families, and future courses of treatment. This is the kind of medical breakthrough that I aspire to incite when I become a doctor.

As for shorter-term goals, I plan to stay ahead on my work in this class and break my habit of procrastination. In this class I hope to improve as a writer in terms of being able to elaborate on my explanations and using text and data effectively in my writing, along with managing my time better.
