Self-Assessment of Field Observation Essay

In conducting this observation, I learned that there are so many minute details that take time and attention to notice. I spent about half an hour outside observing and with every passing minute I noticed something new. From the shape of the leaves to the separation between the trees’ branches, this experience has taught me to be more attentive. Before this observation, I didn’t have many preconceived notions about the tree, as I didn’t know much about it, other than the fact that it was just a really big tree. I appreciate that this experience has allowed me the opportunity to learn more about the sugar maple and delve deeper into the environment that I have lived in for the last 18 years. In conducting the observation, I feel like I could have taken more “traditional” field notes. I used my phone to take pictures and the notes app to keep written notes, but I didn’t have a small notebook, pen/paper to take notes like described in class.

Based on the rubric, I feel that I did a well job at achieving every criterion. I tried to catch the audience’s attention by starting with an interesting fact related to my topic the hook about the tallest tree in the world is sure to reel in a reader’s attention. At multiple points in the essay, I mentioned that the subject of my observation was something that I’ve grown up around. It was a staple of my childhood backyard adventures, establishing my background in relation to the subject. I made multiple points of reflecting on the information I learned and connecting it to my past experiences. I described the way the tree looked in my sight and the way different parts of the tree, such as the leaves and seeds, by my touch. My sources are cited below the essay. I used the conclusion of the essay to refer back to the introduction, the Hyperion tree. I dedicated this paragraph to summarizing and emphasizing the significance of trees in our environment and left the essay on a positive note.
